Acupuncture in Portland
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Acupuncture is a form of East Asian medicine that supports the body’s natural ability to regulate and heal itself. Very fine needles are placed at specific points on the body to help improve circulation, calm the nervous system, and restore balance.
Rather than treating isolated symptoms, acupuncture works with the whole person, supporting physical, emotional, and internal systems together.
-
Acupuncture is commonly used to support people through issues involving headaches, pain, stress, sleep, digestion, hormonal balance, and overall well-being, amongst many other concerns. Many people also seek acupuncture for acute, chronic or complex issues that have not fully resolved with other approaches.
Treatment is individualized and focused on supporting the whole system, not just a single symptom.
-
Care at Emanence Medicine is slow, attentive, and highly individualized. We combine acupuncture with specialized East Asian medical bodywork, including pulse diagnosis, cupping, gua sha, East Asian nutritional counseling, martial arts-based exercise therapies, and somatic emotional therapies.
Each session is tailored to your body, nervous system, and lifestyle, integrating physical, emotional, and energetic care. Our approach emphasizes whole-person healing, helping you release tension, improve circulation, and restore balance in a calm, supportive environment, rather than using a one-size-fits-all protocol.
-
Your first visit at Emanence Medicine begins with setting an intention and a complete intake where we explore your health history, current concerns, lifestyle, and what you most want to shift.
We use detailed pulse diagnosis and palpatory assessment to understand how stress, tension, and internal patterns show up in your body.
Treatment is then tailored to your unique needs.

Acupuncture needles are very thin and usually feels gentle. You may notice a brief sensation, followed by warmth, tingling, or relaxation.
Cupping uses suction and feels like a pulling or decompressing sensation in tight areas. It should feel relieving, not painful.
Gua sha involves smooth strokes on the skin and feels warming or a bit of pressure where there is tension, but it should not hurt.
-
That depends on your goals. For acute issues, one or two sessions may be enough. For chronic patterns, regular treatments yield the best results.

-
Medical bodywork goes beyond relaxation, addressing physical, emotional, and energetic patterns in the body. While massage focuses mainly on muscle tension and comfort, medical bodywork is focused on the structure and function of the body. It is a system that integrates East Asian techniques, somatic therapies, and movement-based methods to support healing, circulation, and whole-person balance.

When prescribed by a trained practitioner, they are generally safe, though effects can vary by individual. We review your medications and health conditions to ensure herbs and supplements work safely alongside your current care.
